A spectacular showcase of the Solent boating community and historic vessels will set sail the waters off the Isle of Wight to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Saturday August 6 – and it’s not too late to participate.
Local Yacht and Sailing Clubs are always invited to join in the celebration of the Solent’s Platinum Jubilee by emailing [email protected] as soon as possible.
All boats, from ribs to sailboats and motorboats, can register with their own yacht club to be part of the official programme, which will be held in Cowes.
The Royal Jubilee Event will feature over 400 boats from sailing clubs and organizations across the Solent region being reviewed by VIPs in a motoring past, before setting off off Bramble Bank.
Highlights include Dragon ‘Bluebottle’ which was presented to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as a wedding gift by The Island Sailing Club. It has been restored and will have raced throughout Cowes Week.
As well as the Solent racing programme, the skies will host a Silver Spitfire Air Show courtesy of the Spitfire Academy, Goodwood.
Back on dry land, there will be music and entertainment at a free concert at Cowes Yacht Haven later today – with headline hits to be announced.
The event immediately follows this year’s Cowes Week.
Hampshire yachtsman Geoff Holt MBE, member of the Organizing Committee, said:
“The Solent Platinum Jubilee event is shaping up to be a memorable ‘once in a lifetime’ celebration, bringing together the sailing and yachting community of the Solent to celebrate our Queen’s 70 years on the throne.”
President of the organizing committee, Jonathan Nainby-Luxmoore added:
“This special day will be full of fun and action on and at sea for members of the Solent yachting and boating community.
“Register your interest if you haven’t already, and please show your support for our chosen charity Wetwheels.
